Swindled Out of 10k Gold!
Happened a couple of weeks ago, but I grouped with a decently geared healer for something and trusted him enough to loan him 10k gold. Dumb decision, maybe, but I’ve often gone out on limbs for people and its turned out just fine, so I gave the guy a chance. I think, a lot of people tend to trust people that are more geared. He was about full T9 — am I the only one that is more likely to loan gold to a geared player than a character in blues?
At any rate, looks like her server transferred or name changed or something. Funny thing is, I have his cell phone number. He sounds like he’s 12 years old so I feel kind of bad. I ticketed it — so wish me luck! If ticketing doesn’t work, I would LOVE to call his mom and handle it that way (LOL), so if anyone knows how to trace a location from a cell phone please do let me know.
Real post will happen shortly — I just had a midterm a couple of hours ago and it was not fun AT ALL

Well, most likely you're screwed, Blizzard does not officially support loans, but report him for his language at the same time as you're reporting him for up and leaving
Honestly, if you take such a risk of loaning someone gold, you should be prepared for it to be a permanent loss. Every day there are constantly hundreds if not thousands of people in WoW and other games that have their trust and lack of caution taken advantage of. This is nothing new, unfortunately most don’t learn their lesson until they are scammed.
Hopefully you learn from this, it is a price to pay, a stupid tax as they say. I’ve been there myself, so don’t feel too bad. I hate to say this, but you will probably never see the gold again.
Yeah — I would report him for his language but I'm sure somewhere in the conversation my language probably was inappropriate as well
Oh — I know. Everytime I usually prepare for the worst with most actions I take, whether in game or IRL, which is why I am not really angry/sad about the gold loss.
If anything, I'd like to make it a little fun
The GM ticket already told me they probably couldn't restore any gold, but they were 'investigating', lol.
Nice guys finish last im afraid mate
good luck hope you get it back ok!
What did he say to make you give him a chance at a 10k loan? Personally I wouldn't lend money to anyone unless its a reasonable amount. I usually ask for something of equal value to hold while they pay me back, that's how I got 2 Nobles Decks =P.
Sorry about your loss bro. But your a pro at making money besides its fake money. Either way you know how that person is like in real life, a total tool.
It sucks to have people betray a trust.
I want to share with you the best advice I ever got about loaning money to friends or family, and applicable to nice-seeming toons in a game, was _don't _loan. Give or don't give. But give the money with no expectation of every seeing a penny back.
In emotional terms, you aren't facing stress wondering when it will paid back, or disappointment and betrayal if it never is, and you are never "taken advantage of" because you don't lose anything ever. On the other end, the receiver doesn't have the stress of knowing you're waiting on money, and having that obligation hanging over them every time they see you. This way, if they decide to pay you back, it is now a gift they can give you to show appreciation — and that feels very different than repaying a loan.
If you feel you can't afford to just give the money/gold away, then you can't really afford to loan it either, because you can't afford the loss if they don't repay. Then it's time to figure out some other way to help them get what they need.
If you're in an officer position in a guild, or even GM, you can give the gold, and instead of asking for it back, suggest they just pass it on. That fosters an atmosphere of generosity within the guild.
This advice was some of the best money advice I ever received. I can give freely when possible, my friends receive with gratefulness and a free conscience, and sometimes I win the payback lottery and free money/gold shows up in my mailbox!
Easiest way to track a person ingame is by adding them to friendlist. That of course works only as long as they stay on the server. Or thats what Ive been told.
about reallife tracking, well, we have a numberservice in our country that you just send the phonenumber in in SMS and if its not a hidden or a prepaid number, itll send you back basic info about that numbers owner, name, address & so on…
Ehhh — he just seemed chill. I'm pretty easy to obtain money to loan from, and I don't even think this incident will really stop me from future loans.
Yeah — he was on my friends, so, now that I think about it, he must have server transferred or faction changed because if he had name changed he would still be on my friends list.
That number tracking sounds awesome, I wish we had something like that
You can always go to whitepages.com and do a reverse look up. If it is a cell phone, then it won't give the address or name, but it will give the city/state. Not sure if that would help you, though. Of course, it could be just enough information to leave in a voicemail to make him think you're going to call his mom. ROFL. "Yeah, I know you live in Tallahassee. Don't make me call your mom!" Ugg… while you're at it, tell her that her 12-year-old is using the term "cum shot." I think that's what bothers me most about all this.
Hmm, maybe some reader here could help me.
