Playing Around with Moonkin Druid Glyphs

Glyphs are the cool new thing out, but you probably already knew that, with the tons of people spamming trade asking “Where is the Lexicon of Power?”, “WTB Ret Paladian Glyph”, etc. While all the trade spam might get a little annoying, there is a lot of power behind glyphs, and I’m going to try to help you pick the right glyphs for your moonkin.

As a general overview, you can currently equip a total of 2 Major Glyphs and 3 Minor Glyphs, with another slot for Major and Minor Glyphs when you hit level 80. Most Glyphs are fairly inexpensive, and can serve many purposes. Minor Glyphs, for the most part, don’t really add to actual damage done or anything, but compliment an ability you have, or something like that. Major Glyphs, on the other hand, usually have a direct impact on a talent you have, such as increasing the damage done by a given talent, reducing the mana cost of a set of talents, or anything in between.

To start off, I’m going to mention the Minor Glyphs that I think are, well, worth mentioning. I currently have the following Minor Glyphs in my 3 Minor Glyph spots on my Moonkin:

Glyph of Thorns – Makes the self buff of thorns on myself an hour long buff, as opposed to a 10 minute buff. Nothing special here, but I’m the guy who always forgets to self-buff thorns because it used to suck. Now that it scales with your spell damage, thorns is a great help when getting ganked or when AoEing mobs. Making it an hour long is merely for convenience, so I could replace this if I found something worth swapping it out for.

Glyph of Unburdened Rebirth – In a game where bag space gets astonomically expensive when you try to go from 18 slot bags to 20 slot bags, 2 bag slots can cost a lot of money. And I usually cary 40 reagents for rebirth. This minor glyph, which cost me like 4g, saved me 2 bag slots, and the gold, however inexpensive, of having to buy the reagents.

To be honest, I can’t remember what my third minor glyph was, but it can’t be that important, since I can’t remember it :D .

My Major Glyphs currently equipped are as follows:

Glyph of Moonfire – This really sucks for PvP, since Moonfire is the spell I use to finish off players trying to run away from me, but so far, I’ve had great returns from this in PvE raiding (on bosses). More info below.

Glyph of Starfire – Combine this with the Glyph of Moonfire, tweak your spell rotation to allow you to cast one Moonfire at the beginning of your boss fight, and you essentially have a never ending Moonfire DOT, even though you only cast the spell once, right at the beginning. This Glyph combination has increased my DPS on bosses by an average of 13% (the percentage comes from the fact that now 13% of my DPS bosses is the Moonfire DOT).

If your still confused about how this works, it literally just adds 3 seconds to your Moonfire DoT every time you hit with Starfire. If you have the right talents equipped, your 3 second Starfire cast should be like 2.75 or 2.88 or something. That means that as long as you keep hitting Starfire, your Moonfire will keep ticking, at 75% more than it usually would have. Combine this with the regular rotation of Insect Swarm/Starfirex4, and you’re looking at a very high DPS. If your raid group has a shammy in the group to pop heroism, you may even be able to get the DoT up to like 30 seconds, meaning that you can still have time to Battle Rez someone, come back, and still be able to refresh your same Moonfire with another Starfire. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Another Major Glyph that is worth mentioning is the Glyph of Innervate. I haven’t tried it out yet personally, but it sounds pretty awesome, seeing as how I usually never innervate myself, but this Glyph would essentially give me full mana regen for 20 seconds even though I innervated someone else. I love the concept. Drop me a comment/email if you’ve tried this glyph out, I’d love to hear if its worth getting/equipping over another glyph.

Anyways, hope you enjoyed this post, back to work with me!

Glyph of Moonfire doesn’t doesn’t quite work like that. Yes, it does add three seconds, but only to a maximum of nine seconds, meaning it’ll only do it three times per moonfire.

@ Viandra – I have a knack for forgetting to update old posts. Back in October 23rd, 2008, when I wrote this post, it did increase the duration of your MF by an unlimited amount. It was nerfed in the next patch.

For anyone reading this post still, please note that what Viandra said isn’t true.

I will try to write an updated post later.

    Thanks for pointing this out,
