My Possible Moonkin PvP Spec in 3.1

The 3.1 patch (is that happening today?) doesn’t really change many things for Moonkins.  The only real change, is that we can know use our feral counter-part’s Last Stand equivalent while in moonkin form as well. A lot of moonkins like to QQ about our survivability, but I don’t like to qq that much; I take what I am given and work with it.

I plan to use a 53/11/7 Balance Spec for PvP Arena

I’m not completely happy with the spec, because I’m missing out on a lot of resto talents I used to pick up in order to put 11 talents in feral just for Survival Instincts.  That said, it should give you a general idea what I plan to pick up, the rest of the changes will most likely be minor.

If you recall, my 2’s team consists of myself and a resto shammy.  The most annoying thing we can face is a rogue + healer combination, since the rogue can pretty much keep me stunned the entire time, especially since I don’t even have my PvP trinket (NOOB!, I know :P ).  Still, spending the 3/3 to buff your Thorns is simply incredible.  In fights versus teams with melee in them, Thorns is usually the top damage.  I’ve seen it do 30k damage in a short Arena fight!  It’s like all melee classes have Seal of the Martyr on them when they attack me or my healer.  So, even if I’m stunned the whole time and I’m facing a rogue/healer, the rogue is doing 400-500+ damage to himself each hit I take.  That’s not THAT much, but if I’m doing okay on health, my resto shammy buddy is probably hitting him with a few spells, Starfall is probably hitting them, and my trees are probably tearing face and occasionally stunning the rogue’s healer.  Its more than enough to keep them busy, at the least, and eventually we can kill one of them.

Personally, I can’t wait to try out Survival Instincts in Moonkin form.  Just imagine being a powerful death chicken with almost 30k health for 20 seconds.  Couple that with an extra armor bonus from Thick Hide, and you’ve probably got at least 18k armor without even being in full PvP gear (I’m not).

All in all, it should be fun, although I’d love to hear what you guys have to say about a better moonkin PvP spec.  There is no way I’m doing Arena’s without being in Moonkin form, however.

Survival Instincts tooltip read “while in cat, bear, or direbear form”, is the tooltip mistaken?

In 3.1 it will affect moonkin as well.

Yeah, I probably should have put up a link:

    http://www.wowinsider.com/2009/02/05/analysis-of-druid-changes-in-3-1/

In 3.1 it will work in Moonkin form as Felkan already said.

I like your talent spec, but I think I’d rate Nature’s Reach, Insect Swarm, and Balance of Power (and maybe Feral Swiftness, for both Prowl and Dash) above both Furor and Eclipse.

I claim no particular PvP skills, that is just my gut feeling for an SI build.

@ Erdluf — I did pick up Nature’s Reach in the spec I put above. I think range is very crucial in PvP.

Regarding IS — I’ve done a lot of Arena PvE specced, and still hardly used it. Any healer should easily be able to heal through it, and if I’m going to be applying DoTs, it better be MF.

Balance of Power – Definitely worth it if you’re lacking the +hit, but since I’m still doing Arena in PvE gear (minus the 3 pieces of Hateful that I’ve picked up from badges), and since I believe you only need a little +hit for PvP, I didn’t think it worthwhile to pick up.

Eclipse has proved worthwhile to me so far in my PvP endeavors — if the team tries to kill my healer first instead of me, Eclipse means I can get some SERIOUS nukage out before they think to CC me. Since I usually begin my Arena’s stealthed out, if they begin nuking my healer I will usually pop out, and manage to proc an Eclipse and kill someone before they know it. I am still hitting 10k+ crits even against people with resil. But I see where you are coming from. Eclipse in Arena is very situational, and almost useless if you are facing a team that is trying to burn you down first.

Furor – Yeah. I wasn’t thinking on my feet when I put the points in there, the +int and the small stats it increases probably isn’t worth the points. I wouldn’t grab Feral Swiftness, however, because since I have a healer, I never switch out of Moonkin form for any reason.

Great comments guys, keep ‘em coming,

Are you planning to Glyph Moonfire? Just curious.

Eh. I’m undecided yet, its a tough call.

I like the 1k+ ticks when they LOS me, but the burst upfront damage is also nice. Very tough decision.

I find that Celestian Focus is really not worth three points anymore. They killed that talent for pvp when they removed the stun on Starfall from it. Exept that it looks pretty much the same as the build i’m going for. Thou i want Insect Swarm. The one thing i’m still debating about is Furor, the 10% Int is really nice and to be able to go in bear and peform a quick bash is a sweet option to have. But by sacrificing it i can get Gale winds and maybe Dreamstate and thats sweet to.
I will probably have to play abit with it and see.

Not intending to be rude bud but that’s a poor spec. you’ve missed out on some of the moonkin’s best abilities just to get a few that will only benefit the Feral druids. You need to get Insect Swarm and the improved moonfire thing, anything with increased spell haste, plenty of intellect, and of course some of this can be found under other lines but never feral. Look, here’s my spec, hope it helps, sorry if i came across as rude. Oh and this is specced for 3v3.

Without being rude myself, I don’t think you have read the 3.1 patch notes. Survival Instincts will now work in moonkin form, giving us 25% more health for 30 (?) seconds. Pretty nice when you are getting hit tough and your healer is cc’ed.

The spec you linked almost looks more like a PvE spec. I think you are missing some talents that are nice for PvP, such as Nature’s Reach, Wrath of Cenarius, Gale Winds, etc.

Moonkin PvP is largely about dealing heavy damage, without being too squishy and dying. A dead opponent while the enemy has two alive is usually a lost arena match.

    @ Fingon –

Celestial Focus is still nice. 3% haste, and chance for Starfire to stun is enough for me.

The Starfire proc comes in handly, occassionally, if you are facing a DPS/healer combination, and the DPS is attacking your healer.

Usually my shammy healer partner can’t be taken down by just 1 DPS, so while a DPS is attacking my healer, I start nuking their healer. The Starfire stun has helped me kill many a healer before.

    Regarding Survival Instincts

I just got around to copying my druid over and notice that it will not work in moonkin form. Is this a recent change since your post. Appreciate the input cuz I was looking forward to it.

    @ Volkman –

Yeah, I’ve heard that. It seems like they stated the change, and it never made it to the PTR. I never heard it was being removed, so I am a bit disappointed myself :(

It’s an odd spec tbh.. I’m pve specced atm and have 17.5k armor with the feral talents and although I think you maybe be right about thorns, my moonfire and insect swarm do 12k (unmitigated) damage in total over the duration (about 15 sec) and since those are instant you can prolly fire them off before any stun hits your. I like where you’re going but I think it’d do it a bit differently. If I come up with a good spec I’ll post it here for reference.

@ Terah – Yeah, the Feral talents are wasted, unless SI will actually work in Moonkin form as they said it would. However, it is not updated correctly on the PTR, so I’m not sure the change will work.

I do use both my DoTS (usually) while PvPing. Its nice to be able to continue to do damage, even while being LoSed.

Put 11 points in feral talents just for survival instinc and 10%armor its bad idea you lose amount of dps and mana regeneration.

Really blizz plan for add moonkin in survival instinc its seriously stupid.

yea i just became balance never even thought of the feral tree but it would be beast dealing 400-500dmg from thorns alone and having extra armor and health at the same time seems beastly to me

Here is the link to my PvP Boomkin spec. Couldn't find any posts to respond too for it and for that I apolagize, but it is a usefule spec. http://www.wowarmory.com/talent-calc.xml?cid=11&a...
Also, never forget the effectiveness of your DoTs. In an Arena, FF will stop someone from stealthing again, but if you keep your DoTs up, they will prevent them from stealthing either.

And if I may make a suggestion, Survival Instincts is not a spell worth spending 11 talents in feral for. You lose the 30% health after the duration, which makes it unappealing because I myself have tied several Arenas because I had to use it and dying just after killing them. I would definitly use those points elsewhere. Survival Instincts is a good spell don't get me wrong, just not worth 11 points just too be spent elsewhere. Above is my moonkin PvP spec. It maximizes my use of the Moonfire and Insect Swarm glyphs. I am currently using Entangling roots, but it isn't really working for me, if you had any suggestions for my third PvP glyph it would help. Boomkins should ignore IFF and IMO, definitly ignore survival instincts.

I say use the moonfire glyph, it does prevent you from moonfire spamming, but that is such an inneffeciant way to kill someone that ticking for about double damage is very nice, especially with the new T9 gear 2 peice set bonus. When you posted that I got very excited, imagine one of your DoTs doing a 3k crit when someone tries to run and heal themself. Glyphs of Moonfire and Insect Swarm are a must.
