could offer advice on how i can improve my gear and gem choices so i am ready
for uldar.

also i am the only moonkin in my guild so cannot seek advice from a different
moonkin

my curent rotation is moonfire, insect warm, then starfire or wrath until
eclipse then i spam the one with the eclipse boost but at the minute i am doin
around 3k to 3.2k on the bosses but would like higher DPS so i am ready for
uldar so if you can offer i better rotation i would be grateful

thanks for any help and just to say your site is very helpful”

Hey there –

While I removed your armory link before putting your question up for your anonymity, I had a lot of problems with your gemming/enchants. I won’t go into too much details since I just recently wrote a post about the appropriate Moonkin Gems & Enchants, which I definitely recommend your read. To wit, you should definitely swap out your meta gem, blue gems should be spell power + spirit (not +16 spirit gems). You also are at 297 hit, which, if you are raiding with either a spriest or keeping up iFF, puts you over cap. You can drop all of your +hit gems, and replace them with +19 spell power, etc.

As far as rotation, I would definitely recommend a read-up on my page about the Moonkin Spell Rotation

Your spec, if that is your PvE spec, could use some improvements as well. Primarily — Genesis is a very bad investment on 2 talent points.

Best of luck!

“dear macbook,

today is the first time i come across your webpage, and i am grateful for all
the info you have put together.

i have attached my armory link in this text box coz somehow it is too long to
fit in the box provided.

1) appreciate if you can take a look & see if there is anything wrong with my
gears? if i got a piece of gear with a combination of crit, haste, and sp but
all stats are relatively lower than another piece with only haste & sp, which
gear should i use? (example: Deathchill Cloak vs Shroud of Luminosity)
understand there is no model answer, but i am always unable to decide which one
to use.

2) i have been using the same dps rotation as you have suggestion all along,
but my output is relatively unstable. normally i will be sitting at #7-12 on a
25 men raid. definitely fail to beat warlock & ele shaman. is it possible to
make suggestion as to what i might have done wrong? (maybe my talent tree?)

there are actually many more questions i have in mind, but these 2 are the most
important one i need to sort out for the time being.

many thanks in advance for your help.

yours truly,

Okay — I’ll try to be brief because I have another 2 emails to reply:

1) Your gear looks fine – but you are nowhere near the hit cap (even though you are specced in iFF. You need a little more than double your current hit. I recommend you check out what the moonkin hit cap is, since it is the most important stat to have since cap.

2) Apart from being far off from the hit cap, your rotation isn’t also optimal for maximum DPS. You are missing Celestial Focus and Wrath of Cenarius! That’s an automatic extra 10%-20% extra damage on your Wraths and Starfires!!!!!!!!!!!! Drop Gale Winds and either drop some of the mana efficiency talents (you have all of them, do you need that much?), and drop Imp Moonfire. There is no way tou can’t have Wrath of Cenarius.

Best of Luck–

Mac

“Hey Mac,
My moonkin and a shadowpriest in the guild are similarly equiped – at
raidbuffed we’re about the same spell power (give and take 20-40 spell power
difference)

However – during Naxx 10 runs this shadowpriest blows away everyone in the
guild on dps and total damage. It’s not even close – it’s like 10-15% different
in damage done.

I’ve basically following the optimum rotation with IFF+IS+MF+Wrath (until SF
ECLI) and then SF. I love it when I’m criting 10k-13k on starfire streaks.
However it’s just plain amazing that the shadowpriest is blowing away everyone
in the guild with the gear that he has and I’m not sure how he’s doing it when
we’re about the same gear level.

I have two set when I do Naxx – I use a max damage/crit/haste set to clear
trash – and then during boss encounters I switch my gears so that I’m at about
280 hit rating to make sure I’m not missing. There’s about a 30-50 spell dmg
loss using the hitcapped gear.+

Hey,

I don’t really have a good enough answer for this one. I have seen some shadow priests hit decent DPS, but I haven’t really ever had one come too close to me on the meters. The only thing I can say is, untill 3.1 hits, since you seem to be raiding with an spriest, casting iFF is a DPS loss.

He may just be pro at playing his class, and there’s not much I can recommend. Don’t get discouraged, however, and keep chugging away. I’m sure you will crush him soon enough :) I checked out your spec, it seems fine, and your gear/enchants seem fine as well. You could use a little more haste, but other than that, you should be doing some respectable damage :)

GL crushing him,

Macbook

The second thing that comes to my mind with that third email is context (the first is using IFF with a shadowpriest in group).

When you’re running your meters, are you paying attention to all data or just boss fights? Shadowpriests can do some pretty nasty AoE damage and most trash pulls in Naxx are AoE. That said, if you’re not just spamming Hurricane on AoE pulls, you’re doing it wrong. (AoE pulls are 3 or more mobs. Against 2 mobs, it’s better to single-target DPS them.) For raids, boss fights are all that matters in terms of DPS and damage output, so focus on these.

Other than that, shadowpriests do decent damage, but I think we have their number for single-target DPS.

@ Xiera – Fair point. They do indeed do si-ick AoE damage.

    @ Curious –

I do IFF to improve the group dps – (more crits for the casters?) so maybe I can take comfort in that those dmg bonus are not being captured on the meters. I can spec out of IFF and try to get Starfall – so I can pop Starfall + Hurricane for the AOE boost on meters…

IFF is more *hits* for casters, which *can* mean more crits (if they otherwise would have missed), but doesn’t directly give any bonus to crit chance for other casters. (It only increases *your* crit chance.)

Take heart, though, because the 3% less hit required means that your fellow casters (and you) can gear for other stats like crit and haste. So, yes, it is still an overall raid DPS increase. (Of course, a shadowpriest would cover this too, do to their Misery talent.)

I *do* recommend getting Starfall. Besides working quite well on AoE groups^, it can act as a DoT with a cooldown against bosses. Just make sure you understand the mechanics of the fight and the spell so you don’t mess anything up.

^ While doing well on AoE pulls might make you feel good about your DPS for the entire raid, you should really be focusing on your boss DPS, which is largely single-target.

    @ Aju -

Pretty much what Xiera said here (man he’s good at replying these before I can!).

I think you mentioned on another post somewhere that you usually always have an spriest. Until 3.1 hits, you can either drop a point from there or from a mana-regen talent, pickup Starfall, and use it for an extra 15-20k dmg on a boss.

I specced for Starfall + 2 pts in Gale Wind. (out of 3 from IFF) – If I’m finding that I’m missing a lot more – I suppose can add some + hit gems in my +hit set.

@ Aju – Strange. You shouldn’t be missing any more if you have a spriest, because iFF and Misery do the same thing, and cannot stack.

I don’t usually advocate against +hit gems, I’m a pure +19spell power gem guy (except for the 2 blue gems needed for meta gem).
