Moonkin 2pc T9 Set Bonus

Last night after killing a few bosses in Heroic ToC 25, I picked up enough badges to get my second piece of Tier9, i245 version.  Many people in my new guild are waiting to get the i258 drops, but since I’m an app for at least another week and I assume everyone has insane amounts of DKP, I doubt I will see i258 T9 for a very, very long time.  So I’ve been farming daily heroics, doing all versions of ToC, and saving my Emblems of Triumph.

I equipped Malfurion’s Cover of Triumph (man is it ugly, I had to turn off my helm view) as well as Malfurion’s Vestments of Triumph.  I think respecced my 3/3 Moonglow that I really only use for the Vezax hardmode fight, and picked up 2/2 Improved Moonfire.  All I can say is – WOW.  Critting Moonfire DoTs are absolutely amazing.  On the Twin Valkyrs, my Moonfire crits were hitting for 5k+.  2k-3k ticks is common, and it looks like I’m getting around a 60% chance for the DoT to crit, according to Recount.

Switching my T8.5 helm and T8.5 chest to T9.245 was a nice upgrade as well, stat-wise.  My crit shot up by at least 3%.  Combine that with Focus Magic and 2pc T8, and I am over 80% chance to crit during a Lunar Eclipse.  Sheesh.

Last I heard, on the PTR, Nature’s Grace was not proc’ing from Moonfire DoT crits — I will need to test it on live now that I am able to and see if it does/doesn’t proc.  I will update either this post or on a comment on this post.

My Glyph Situation

Many of you know I am an avid fan of the Glyph of Starfall.  I have blogged on and on about the topic.  At first, I dropped the Glyph of Insect Swarm and replaced it with the Glyph of Starfall.  Then, when the Eclipse changes in patch 3.2 , hit, and I got 4pc T8, I concluded that it might be smarter (since I really wanted to keep Glyph of Starfall), to switch out the Glyph of Starfire.  Sure, I care about math and all, but I like to play the way I like to play.  With 3.2 hit, the benefit of the Glyph of Starfire was nearly halved – you are not extending your Moonfire DoTs by Starfire if you are in the middle of a Solar Eclipse.

Now, armed with 2pc T9 and the Moonfire idol, I think it might be time to make the switch batch and drop the Glyph of Insect Swarm.  I think about it like this: with a 60%+ chance to crit for 2-3k, this glyph will cause 3 “free” ticks of the DoT (9 seconds).  We are looking at a free 4-6k damage in exchange for nothing, per Moonfire.  I still plan to hang onto the Glyph of Starfall.  Its nice to pop while moving, while there are adds, or to use as a mini-Heroism during a Solar Eclipse.

Reign of the Unliving (Trinket)

Reign of the Unliving dropped this week on our regular ToC25 clear, and based on what I’ve seen it do so far, I wouldn’t be suprised if it is BiS.  No, I didn’t win it, but I was looking at Recount for the elemental shaman that won the trinket.  The damage from the pillar itself accounted for an average of 4% extra damage.  Apparently the pillar scales with certain talents, crit chance, etc, and is overall quite awesome.

I’ve always been a fan of trinkets that have a *useful* alternate ability.  For too long I have been stuck seeing the same stats on all my gear, and I like seeing something new for a change.  150 spell power and a 4% damage increase is HUGE, I hope I have the chance to get my hands on one of these.  I also believe there is a Heroic version of this trinket but I couldn’t find it on Wowhead.  Good times.

Grats on the upgrade! And yeah, that is a very nice trinket. Especially if it counts Starfall crits or Hurricane crits. Do post a follow-up on NG proccing off MF crits. It would be interesting if it did not.

Congrats on the 2T9! I'm less than 15 badges and a trophy short, which means I'll probably be getting it this week.

Reign is an amazing trinket. Should proc off all critical hits, which should include Moonfire, Hurricane, and Starfall (to address Relevart's response). Traditionally, trinkets like that (Lightning Capacitor) have been affected by talents, so we might be at a bit of a disadvantage there. Fire mages, warlocks, and ele shamans have talents that could make this trinket even better. Nonetheless, it's still probably BiS for us. I hope to use it with my Eye of the Broodmother.

Well it won't proc off DoT crits, I think they patched that recently.

Yeah — I read on WoWhead that certain talents affect it — which sounds awesome for other classes, but I still want the trinket :)

And I still have to test and see whether 2pc T9 MF crits proc NG — something tells me its not going to.

It doesn't. It's the debuff critting, not you. Foofy over at TMR tested and confirmed this on the PTR.

I read about that, but I am reluctant to believe information off the PTR. If I recall correctly, her test was done right after they first even made the dual-cooldown Eclipse work — I don't think Eclipse was working properly when they launched the patch on the PTR.

Sucks if it doesn't, even if its not me directly critting, it is my debuff and would be nice to get some free NG's in there. Starfall procs NG and I guess technically its the buff on me critting, right?

Guess its not really a huge deal either way.

There's a difference between the way buffs and debuffs are handled though. This is true of many aspects of the game and is the reason why many similar buffs or similar debuffs don't stack, but buffs and debuffs that are similar can stack. Basically, the buffs are calculated when you finish casting the spell while the debuffs are calculated when it hits.

That in and of itself is an interesting piece of information. It means that you can see unexpected results due to spell traveling time.

One distinction I should make though — hit tables (whether you crit, miss, get resisted, or miss) are compiled into one table that is operated on when the spell finishes casting. It's generally just the damage modifiers that are calculated at different times.
