Loot: To Pass, or Not To Pass
This somewhat deviates from my usual way of posting, but something bugged me last night in my guild’s Naxx25 run. I’ve always been the sole moonkin in all of my guild raids, and our usual Naxx25 group is pretty geared out. Thing is, Sinister Blades, my guild, has so many 80s now, we had to setup 2 Naxx25 groups, so we are gearing some people out. I’ve been raiding with SB for months now, and the guild uses a blind bidding, DKP system (ie – 10 DKP per boss, you whisper the ML your bid, and you pay whatever you bid in DKP, and you don’t know what anyone else is bidding).
Thing is, a lot of the people that came to our raid last night were a) alts, b) people that don’t usually raid with us, or c) people going offspec. Surplus Limb dropped, so I bidded 50% of the DKP I had for it, since it was a clear upgrade from Accursed Spine (hit + haste > spirit and crit). Our group was a bit melee heavy, and the casters that wanted it didn’t have enough DKP to win it (they both had spent it all on the same run). I won the bidding, DKP was subtracted, and I started getting spammed by this guy who was pissed off I bid on the item. Mind you, he was at 0 DKP, and was bidding for it with Abyss Crystals. His argument was that it wasn’t as large an upgrade for me as it would have been for him, that I was a loot whore, asshole, etc.
So, I’m trying to think, did I do anything wrong? DKP rewards those who attend raids the most, and who don’t DC early (people who leave early don’t get any DKP, since its awarded at the end of the raid). You can save as much DKP as you like. Not only that, you have no way of knowing who wants to bid on an item (unless they talk to you beforehand), so there’s no point in not taking an item you want.
Come to think of it, people have gotten pissed at me because I wanted to roll on a spell power weapon, back when I used Titansteel Guardian, since I knew it was getting nerfed.
Do people really have a right to complain to you, when you have gotten most of your gear on your own, lead pugs, used badges, and spent gold on BoEs?
Also, how do your guilds do heroics?
Anyways, sorry if this came off a little rant-ish, it wasn’t intended; I just want to see what people think as far as loot, and how they do loot with their guilds. I also picked up Dying Curse last night, not because I really needed the hit (I was already at soft cap), but it will let me unequip Signet of the Malevolent when I get a better ring. I’m a bit unhappy that both of my trinkets right now are based on RNG procs, and could be essentially useless during things like Maexxna web sprays, Malygos vortex, etc, if they proc while I can’t cast. I want the OS25 trinket badly.

Aahh the drama of large guilds…
What I do NOT miss it.
From the raiding experience I have we solved issues like these in the following way:
* raider > try out > hangaround/alt
* Mainspec > off spec
* DKP is king.
The best (horde) guild on my server will give loot to raider for 1 dkp if he bids versus alt or such.
You have all the right in my mind.

Well it wasn’t an issue so much as it bugged me. I did get the item, no dispute, because the guild always goes by DKP > all else. The only exception being they have made me pass occasionally on a cloth item when a healer needed it significantly more, and they bid a similar amount of DKP. That, IMO, is fine.

You followed the rules you got nothing to be ashamed of or anything and the other is just pissed because he could not do put as much time as you have. Sounds like he just wanted more gear than he got. Next he has to spend the time and effort. And main spec should always take priority.
Our guild favors the main raiders before anyone else in raids. Once the main raiders are fairly geared the make 10-mans need rolls for gear. Thats when people start building off-spec sets and some bring alts to get them geared. When DKP is used. Core raiders get first choice. Tryouts and alts cant even bid in first round of dkp bidding. If none of the main raiders bid on it in the first round then alts and tryouts can put in their bids for items during the second round.
Grats on the gear. It sounds like someone was just crying over you legitimately winning the item. You won it fair and square.
Hope my 2 cents helped
Thanks for the comments and thanks for reading.
I’m hoping to post soon over the weekend

You had all the right to bid on it, in fact, as a Moonkin, and as far as i know, thats the better Offhand for Us in the whole game ATM, overall its amazing.
And concerning the “ethics”, you’re a raider, he was someone, you have all the rights and privileges over him.
There is another system where you privilege the mayor upgrades over little ones (like the case you just wrote about), and of course, if you pick a trinket or something that is better suited for another class, that other class can always give out his arguments, who knows, maybe he is right…, but obviously this wasnt the case…
@ Akutsito — Yeah, that’s why I bid on the item. Its BIS, and since there’s not much to do left in game (since my guild has problems with Malygos), I’m currently trying to get BIS for all my gear. I’m surprising close.
Thanks for commenting,

quit being bad
Frankly, I would bring up the whispers tot he guild leadership. His name calling / etc in whispers like that when you followed the rules on your main spec while helping to carry alts/non-raiders is just flat out rude.
Someone (an officer) should have a little chat about how that is unacceptable behavior and if it continues no more raids for him. He wants stuff, then he makes an effort. The new raids are coming out and Blizzard has already said they will not be a cake walk so the core raiders had better be getting best in slot gear now while they still can to reduce the repair bills later.
@ Sepeck -
Eh, I would, but I can handle stuff like this on my own. I think he complained to some of his “friends” already and they were actually on the same page as me
And yeah, I definitely need to go read about Ulduar, I want to see how else I can prepare for it.

My guild does DKP completely different, but i know it sucks being rolled on an item because they have more dkp. Sadly im not the only boomkin in my raid group so there is some competition.
Also wanted to add that this website is very helpful

Yeah, but DKP, IMO, is one of the best ways to do loot. It rewards people with gear for solid attendance and tenure with the guild.
I’m glad you enjoy the site
