Level 80 Moonkin Hit Cap, Making Gold, Personal Updates

So, I haven’t posted in quite awhile, so this post is way overdue.  I’ve been swamped, and have only really had time to show up for a few raids, pew pew a little, and then go back to work.  But anyways, the first topic on the menu today is the level 80 Moonkin Hit Cap.

The Level 80 Moonkin Hit Cap is 341 or 263

I got these numbers from a great post at Flash of Moonfire, which also includes a list of pre-Naxx gear with +hit on it.  I highly recommend you check that list out.  Anyways, 341 is the actual hit cap, but you can hit the cap with 263 hit if you have a Shadow Priest present in your raids.  Since my GM and the other raid leader are both Shadow Priests, I’m only shooting for 263 hit.

Before I continue, I need to stress how important being hit capped is.  At level 70, I was way over hit cap (on accident), and never really had to work to hit it, because most of my gear from T6 dungeons already had hit on it.  What I slowly began finding out in WoTLK was that very, very few pieces of gear actually had hit rating on it, and that hit rating on leather gear was essentially impossible to find.  Funny enough, I am still hitting 3k DPS on single target bosses, even while missing at least 10% of the time, so I can’t imagine what my DPS would be like if I was hit capped.  We did a lot of bosses in Naxx last night (7, to be exact), and at least on 4 of those fights, I was top DPS, with at least a 500 dps gap between me and the 2nd highest dps.  I was also highest on overall, with a pretty decent gap between me and number 2.  Now just imagine if I was hit capped…..

Yesterday I spent a ton of gold getting gear with hit on it.  I happen to be a tailor, and I think all of the Ebonweave gear set has +hit rating on it, so that’s always a temporary solution.  Just keep an eye out for gear with hit, and give in to the fact that it will probably be cloth gear.  Also, don’t be like me and try to ignore getting hitcapped, thinking you will just pick it up natively in your gear — I guess that won’t happen in WoTLK like it did in TBC.  I still don’t agree in really gemming for hit, but I might have to start.

Lagging in Naxxramus

This is just a quick section, but from what I understand, most people lag to death in Dalaran, probably because so many people are there, and its such a tiny city.  We have tried Thaddius in Naxx around 5 times so far, and we can’t kill him.  It’s not because its a hard fight, its because it lags to about 2 FPS, and noone can even cast a spell.  Is anyone else having problems lagging horribly in Naxx?  Don’t even get me started with lagging in Wintergrasp…..

Making Gold

I’ve never really been a player to be incredibly rich in-game.  I’ve never had over 6,000 gold at any given time on my account, but I may have just found a way to make a pretty good amount of gold.  Its nothing confirmed yet, and I’m still tweaking and running some numbers, but I must have made at least 700 gold last night, with about 30 minutes of playing around on the AH.  The real test is to see if my auctions from this morning sold yet, I have over 2000 gold of crap in the auction house.  Wish me luck!

Personal Updates

I try to keep personal stuff from really clogging my blog, but I do want to say I quit smoking :) .  It’s been 3 days already, which may not sound like much, but I think the first few weeks are the hardest.  I think I may have to play more WoW to keep my mind off of cigarettes, hahaha.  Apart from being busy at work, there isn’t much going on.  I mean, Christmas is coming, woo, but that’s about it.

I know I still have a few post requests to answer; I have not forgotten.  I will try to post more frequently as well, but you should also subscribe to my RSS feed (link on right sidebar) to always know whenever I update my blog, since I update it pretty randomly).  And check out my forums, its like I’m talking to myself!

Congrats on quitting smoking. Nice post about Hit Rating since I was curious about that. I wonder if Feral hit cap would be the same (probably? since they were merged)

Good question, I would also assume they’d be the same, but you should probably double check with another source if you plan on going feral DPS.

BTW, I still haven’t decided on whether or not I’ll do

Moonkin PvE Spec and Moonkin PvP spec

    or

Moonkin PvE Spec and Resto PvE spec

for when duel specs come out.

    Its tough deciding.

Want to start by saying thank you. I have been looking to get my WOW fix while at work for a few months and finally stumbled on to your site. i am a long time feral druid and went moonkin for the guild (and myself cause every tank secretly wants to blow stuff up from far away) and have been looking for every and any forum that could help me get better. I have been raiding Naxx 10-25, slowly but surely, and have been looking for ways to up my dps. I am not hit capped (i dont know what it is right now….that whole work thing.) and raid buffed about 1900 spell power. I am sure my dps could be higher if my rotation was better. I have tried playing with it a few different ways but with similar results.

rotation: FF/IS/MF/SF x (till eclipse) Wrath (till eclipse ends) REPEAT!

That is what i have had the most success with. And to touch on Starfall…i use that on boss fights all the time. Its plainly just more DPS. Unlike hurricane that requires you to focus you can proc starfall and go back into your rotation. I would vote: YES to talenting Starfall.

Wow, this has turned into a long post. So any recommendations would be great.

Grats on the no smoking thing. i have NEVER smoked but my wife does. We tried but just seems that she will not have the gumption to let it go.

RE: Andre – that’s a pretty interesting take on Starfall -in that you can go back into your rotation.

I think an example of this would be the old kingdom spider boss where you can focus on the boss or the guardian and let starfall work on the little mobs.

Yes no? It’s likely that it’s still very situation but highly useful when you can figure out situations to use it.

I’m looking for someone who can help me…
I’m really getting crazy… I’ve built and tried 5-6 talent trees, I’ve taken some epics with level 200 and actually i’ve only one item under lvl 185, I’ve changed my spell cycling following Elitistjerks advices (using their xls file for DPS Moonkin). In spite of this, my DPS is still under 1600 and i’m beaten by mages, Death Knight (tank!!!) and locks… I’m really confused and I can’t understand why.
I NEED your help to understand why… i cannot spend golds in respec only for trying, it’s only a loss of time.
    This is my spec:

    equip: http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Stormrage&n=Thelothian

    talents: http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Stormrage&n=Thelothian

I’m actually using this spell cycling:
FF-MF-IS-SF (until Eclipse starts then i’ll switch to Wrath)
and sometimes, on low level trash mob, i’m using a simple FF-MF-IS-WRATH…

Therefore i can’t understand where’s the problem, and why i can’t make a decent DPS.
Blizzard says that moonkins are one of the best dps class… but i can’t see this.
I don’t want to respecc and become feral…
    Please help me.
    Thanks in advance.

@ Andre — That rotation is actually what I’ve just shifted to. I have been very anti-Eclipse in the past, but used in the way you just mentioned, it has increased my DPS, and made raiding a little more fun, IMO.

As far as Starfall, its still my opinion its not worth the chance to pull another set of mobs, the 3 min CD, or the mana cost (even though I’m a mana beast). I can hit 3.4k DPS on a boss, go all out, and still finish the fight with 97% of my mana pool remaining :P

What % of your DPS does Starfall increase?

@ Thelothian — I think I’ll write my next post to answer this.

If I may suggest. I have played WoW for close to three years now, and I have played all three specs on my druid quite frequently, in raids and PvP.
Restoration is a b-e-a-utifal talent tree, I would say to go Restoration for PvE, only because healers are needed alot more than DPS, and that I find Boomkin much more versatile in PvP. For the first time in a few months I went back to Boomkin for PvP, and I can end up at the top of DPS and like 4th in healing without trying in a BG. Moonkins are IMO much more useful in PvP than Restoration, though, I never get tired of going into a BG and healing through 5 hordies beaten the hell out of me :)
Thanks for reading, and if you would like my Boomkin PvP and Resto PvE Spec or Vice Versa, please E-mail me.
